最早的一種存放衣服、文件、貴重物品和其他財物的器具。起源于古埃及第十八王朝(? 前 1567～前1320)。最簡單的箱子由6塊木板用釘釘制而成，其中一塊木板作為箱蓋。13世紀(jì)法國人最早在箱子上雕刻花紋，在木板上鑲嵌用熟鐵制成的渦卷形飾物。15～18世紀(jì)，箱子被精心制作成精美的裝飾性家具。
