1. moderation,mildness緩和，溫和。
△H.VIII.2.2.137(136):“Deliver this with modesty to the Queen.”用溫和的態(tài)度把這件事通知王后。
△H.VIII.4.2.74: “With thyreligious truth and modesty，”你以你一絲不茍的信義和溫和態(tài)度。
△H.VIII.5.3.64 (5.2.99): “Win strayingsouls with modesty again,/ Cast none away.”對于誤入歧途的靈魂，要用溫和的態(tài)度再爭取過來，一個也不要拋棄。
2. self-control,self-restraint克制，約束。
△Shr.Ind.1.94:“But I am doubtful of your modesties，” 不過我擔(dān)心你們會忍俊不禁。
3. restraint,limits抑制，限度。
△Ham.3.2.22 (19):“that you o'erstep not the modesty of nature. ”你們切不可超越自然的分寸。
4. freedom from excess,no exaggeration 不過分，不夸張。
△Ham.5.1.228 (207): “No,faith,not a jot,but to follow him thither with modesty enough,and like-lihood to lead it.” i.e. with sufficient moderation,and likelihood leading it(= imagination). 不，真的，一點(diǎn)也不；這不過是一步一步、毫不夸張地推想下去，以常情為向?qū)ЯT了。
5. sense of decency and propriety,freedom from ar-rogance or obtrusive impudence體面感，懂規(guī)矩，謙虛，知禮。
△Mer.5.1.205:“wanted the modesty，” i.e. whowanted the sense of propriety. 竟這樣不懂規(guī)矩。
△Oth.4.2.73 (74): “I should make very forges of mycheeks. / That would to cinders burn up modesty,/Did I but speak thy deeds.”倘若我把你干的事情說出來，我的面頰就會變成火爐，把羞恥燒成了灰燼。
6. restraint,propriety,simplicity 節(jié)制，適度，質(zhì)樸。
△ Ham.2.2.469 (440):“set down with as much modesty as cunning.”i.e. written with as much restraint asskill. 寫得又樸實(shí)又巧妙。
7. fitting arrangement,proper or correct conduct.propriety合適安排，適當(dāng)或正確的行為，得體。
△H.V.4.1.73 (72): “you shall find the ceremonies of the wars,and the cares of it,and the forms of it,and the sobri-ety of it,and the modesty of it,to be otherwise.”你定會發(fā)現(xiàn)戰(zhàn)爭的儀式、其中的操心、其中的形式、其中的秩序，以及其中的適當(dāng)行為，都跟這里的不同。
8. chastity貞潔。
△Rom.3.2.15:“till strange lovegrow bold,/ Think true love acted simple modesty.”等到這份羞怯的愛情變得膽大起來，就會認(rèn)為純真的愛情得到圓滿成就便是質(zhì)樸的貞潔。
△As.3.2.157 (148): “SadLucretia's modesty.”可憐的魯克麗西婭的堅(jiān)貞。
△Tw.5.1.347 (335): “And tell me,in the modesty of hono-ur，”憑著你高貴的貞潔告訴我。
