Scylla and Charybdis:Scylla was a sea-monster trans-formed into a cluster of rocks in the strait between It-aly and Sicily,and opposite Scylla lay the whirlpoolCharybdis. The nearness of these dangers to each oth-er gave rise to a proverb: “Thou fallest into Scylla,endeavouring to avoid Charybdis.”西拉是意大利與西西里島之間海峽中的 一群礁石(據(jù)云為海怪所變),卡利布底斯是與其相對(duì)的一個(gè)危險(xiǎn)的漩渦,船只到此,常常遇難。因而產(chǎn)生了一句古諺:“當(dāng)你竭力逃避卡利布底斯(漩渦)的時(shí)候,卻撞上了西拉(礁石)?!?br/>△Mer.3.5.17(16):“thus when I shun Scylla, your father,I fall into Charybdis,your mother.”我躲開了西拉,你的父親,又撞上了卡利布底斯,你的母親。 |
