重要的食用魚和游釣魚。鱸形目鯖科，世界性分布。食魚及無脊椎動物。體呈流線形，具兩扇背鰭。叉形尾前具一系列小鰭，可同時游動。普通鯖(Scomber scombrus)為大西洋主要盛產(chǎn)種類，體長約30厘米，上側(cè)藍(lán)綠色、下側(cè)銀白色。
