removedp. a. 1. distant,remote,retired,secluded,separated遙遠(yuǎn)的,偏遠(yuǎn)的,隱退的,與世隔絕的,分離的。 △As. 3.2.364(342):“so removed a dwelling.”這么一個(gè)偏遠(yuǎn)的住處。 △Tw.5.1.93 (89): “And grew a twenty years re-moved thing / while one would wink:”i.e.became ina moment as strange as someone who had not seen mefor twenty years.一霎工夫他就與我疏遠(yuǎn)了二十年。 △Ham.1.4.60: “Look with what courteous action /It waves you to a more removed ground,”i.e.a remoter spot,a more retired place.看,他多么客氣地招呼你到一個(gè)較遠(yuǎn)的地方去。 2. distant in relationship by a certain degree,remotelyconcerned (親戚)隔房的,遠(yuǎn)隔的,關(guān)系疏遠(yuǎn)的。 △As.5.4.71 (68):“Upon a lie seven times removed,”i.e.upona lie which passed through six stages till it reached theseventh viz. the “l(fā)ie direct” (=“you are a liar”),which was the quickest way to provoke a duel. 根據(jù)一句隔著七層的謊言。(按:當(dāng)時(shí)上流社會(huì)習(xí)慣,如以lie direct即“公然撒謊”指責(zé)人,即可引起決斗。此處“隔著七層的謊言”指吵架距離引起決斗的程度還很遙遠(yuǎn),看下文說(shuō)明可知。) △Rom.3.3.95 (96): “blood removed but little from her own”,i.e. closely related to her in blood.很親近的骨血。 3. remotely concerned,not directly concerned,lessintimately involved關(guān)系疏遠(yuǎn)的,非直接有關(guān)的,未密切卷入的。 any soul removed: i.e.stranger陌生人。 △1H.IV.4.1.33:“nor did he think it meet / To lay so dangerousand dear a trust / On any soul removed,but on hisown ”i.e.nor did he think it fitting to entrust a busi- ness so dangerous and important to any person thanhimself. 而且他還認(rèn)為,除了他自己以外,把這樣危險(xiǎn)而重大的 事情托付給任何生人也不合適。 |
