鼎足而立dǐng zú ér lìstand like the legs of a tripod—a tripartite balance of forces
? 誠(chéng)能聽臣之計(jì)，莫若兩利而俱存之，叁分天下，鼎足而居，其勢(shì)莫敢先動(dòng)。(《史記·淮陰侯列傳》2623) If you follow my plan,however,you can take advantage of both sides and divide the land into three with them like the three legs of a tripod so that neither of the others dare make the first move.
? 蜀有三川之險(xiǎn)，吳有三江之固：若二國(guó)連和，共為唇齒，進(jìn)則可以兼吞天下，退則可以～。(《三國(guó)演義》736) Now Shu has the strength of its geographical difficulties just as Wu has the protection of its three rives. If these two countries are at peace they are mutually protective. They may swallow up the rest of the empire,or they may stand like the legs of a tripod. |
