| 釋義 | gentleman /'djentlman; 'djEntlman/ n (pl -men) /-man; -man/ 1 man who shows consideration for the feelings of others, who is honourable and courteous. 紳土; 君子。 ~'s agreement, one that is binding in honour, but cannot be enforced at law. 君子協(xié)定。 2 (hist) man of good family attached to a court or the household of a great noble: (史) 國(guó)王或貴族的侍從： one of the king's gentlemen. 國(guó)王的一位侍從。 at-'arms, one of the sovereign's bodyguard. 國(guó)王的侍衛(wèi)。 3 (hist) man entitled to bear arms but not a member of the nobility. (史) 有資格從軍的平民。 4 (dated use) man of wealth and social position, esp one who does not work for a living: (過(guò)時(shí)用語(yǔ)) 有錢和社會(huì)地位的人 (尤指無(wú)需工作以謀生者)： 'What does he do for a living?' — 'Nothing; Ae's a ~ ' 他做什么謀生'什么也不做，他是個(gè)有錢不需工作的人。 ‘ ，~ 'farmer,~ who has a farm, but does no manual work himself. (M 有農(nóng)場(chǎng)，但不從事勞力工作之) 鄉(xiāng)紳。 5 polite form of address to men (eg in an audience) : 諸位先生 (對(duì)男性聽(tīng)眾的禮稱)： Gentlemen! 諸位先生！ Ladies and Gentlemen! 諸位女士和先生！ Also used instead of Sirs or Dear Sirs when writing to a business firm, etc. (在商蘋(píng)信件中亦代替 Sirs 或 Dear Sirs) → ~ adj feeling, behaving, or looking like a ~⑴; suitable or right for a ~ (1): 紳士風(fēng)度的; 似紳士的; 合乎紳士的： a ~ly apology. 紳士似的道歉。 |
