| 釋義 | hardly /'ho: dli; 'hardli/ adv 1 only just; not quite; scarcely: 剛剛; 不十分; 簡(jiǎn)直沒有： I ~ know her, have only a very slight acquaintance with her. 我跟她不熟。 We had ~ got/H~ had we got into the country when it began to rain. 我們剛到鄉(xiāng)間就下雨了。 (Cf 參較 No sooner... than). I'm so tired I can ~ walk. 我太累，簡(jiǎn)直走不動(dòng)了。 2 (used to suggest that sth is improbable, unlikely or unreasonable) : (用以表示某事大廃不會(huì)發(fā)生或不合理)： He can ~ have arrived yet. 他大槪還沒有到。 You can ~ expect me to lend you money again. 你別希望我再借錢給你。 3 (neg in meaning) almost no; almost not: (否定意義) 幾乎沒有; 幾乎不： He ~ ever (- very seldom) goes td bed before midnight. 他很少在午夜以前就寢。 Cf 參較 His wife almost always goes to bed before midnight. 他的妻子幾乎總是在午夜以前就寢。 I need ~ say (= It is almost unnecessary for me to say) that I am innocent. 我?guī)缀跤貌恢f我是無罪的。 There's ~ any coal left. 幾乎沒有煤剩下了。 H ~ anybody (= Very few people) came to the meeting. 幾乎沒有人到會(huì)。 4 (from hard (4)) severely: (由 hard' 第 4 義而來) 嚴(yán)旗地： ~ treated. 受嚴(yán)苛對(duì)待。 5 (from hard (6)) with effort or difficulty. [ 由 hard1 第 6 義而永) 辛苦地。 For this sense the adv 'hard' is usu preferred. 指此義時(shí)，通常多用副詞 ’hard'。(Cf 參較 hard-earned money 辛苦賺來的錢 and salary that was ~ (ie only just, barely) earned. 僅僅能夠賺到的薪水; 勉強(qiáng)賺到的薪水) 。 |
