研究用以識(shí)別個(gè)人、家族、團(tuán)體機(jī)構(gòu)帶有世襲性或繼承性的標(biāo)記的藝術(shù)和科學(xué)。起源于古代識(shí)別身著戰(zhàn)袍的士兵所持盾牌上的標(biāo)記。這種標(biāo)記12世紀(jì)起在歐洲逐漸成為繼承性的，還被用作封印。成套的紋章也開(kāi)始普遍使用。英國(guó)的紋章由建于1483年的紋章院統(tǒng)一管理。蘇格蘭也有類似的紋章管理機(jī)構(gòu)。整套紋章通常包括：盾形紋、頂飾（頭盔上的飾品）、頭盔、復(fù)巾、冠冕、銘辭等。盾牌上所印紋記都含古已有之的特別含意。通過(guò)紋章可以識(shí)別持有者的封建等級(jí)。
