Star Chamber: The court of Star Chamber,com-posed mainly of the King's Privy Council,was thehighest royal court in England from the 14th to early17th century. It is so called because it met regularly inthe Star Chamber,a room ornamented with goldenstars in the royal palace of Westminster. It exercisedjurisdiction in regard to “such offences as riots,slan-ders and libels,or even criticisms of magistrates，” and developed into a type of arbitrary and oppressive tri-bunal.
