功成名立功成名就;功成名遂gōng chéng míng lìachieve success and win recognition;accomplish both success and fame; fame follows upon success ? 且昔者中山之國地方五百里,趙獨吞之,~而利附焉,天下莫之能害也。(《史記·范雎蔡澤列傳》2409)Chongshan with five hundred li of territory was swallowed up by Zhao alone,bringing Zhao such fame and such advantages that no other states could harm it. ? 功成名遂,名譽不可虛假。(《墨子·修身》) Fame follows upon success and is not obtainable by hypocrisy. ? 待到功成名遂,當然也就淡漠起來。(《魯迅選集》Ⅲ—70) But once they had made a name,of course they calmed down. ? 是因為出了一本或二本書,有了一點小名或大名,得到了教授或別的什么位置,功成名遂,不必再寫詩寫小說了,所以永遠不見了。(魯迅《二心集·對于左翼作家聯(lián)盟的意見》40) After winning a greater or lesser amount of fame by publishing a couple of books,they become professors or find some other job.
