1. be in the service of伺候。
△Rom.1.1.60 (54): “Iserve as good a man as you.” (Sampson means Capu-let,his master.)我伺候的主人一點(diǎn)也不比你們差。
serve God:i.e.be obedient to God. behave yourself.be about your business侍奉上帝，（指）敬畏上帝，安分一點(diǎn)，做你的正事。
△Rom.2.5.45 (44): “Go thy ways.wench,serve God.”去吧，丫頭，好好敬奉上帝。(又譯：做你的事去吧。)
2. attend伴隨。
△R.III.4.4.196: “Shame serves thylife and doth thy death attend.”恥辱不但伴隨你在生前，也要伴隨你在死后。
3. be of use to. be good to. avail對(duì)…有用，對(duì)…有好處，有助于。
△2H.VI.3.1.119: “It serves you well,mylord,to say so much.”大人，你說了這么多，為你自己辯解得不錯(cuò)嘛。
4. favour眷顧。
△3H.VI.4.7.78: “If fortune serveme,I'll requite this kindness.”如果命運(yùn)對(duì)我眷顧，我定要報(bào)答諸位這種好意。
5. allow,encourage,have... to準(zhǔn)許，鼓勵(lì)，讓…去…
△Mer.2.2.1: “Certainly my conscience will serveme to run from this Jew my master.”我的良心當(dāng)然不準(zhǔn)我從我的猶太主人家里逃跑。(按：學(xué)者認(rèn)為“will”與“serve”之間可能漏掉一個(gè)“not”，因?yàn)閺南挛目?，此句的意思?yīng)為“不準(zhǔn)逃跑”。)
6. satisfy the needs of,suffice for滿足…的要求，足夠應(yīng)付。
△1H.IV.4.1.131: “My father and Glendowerbeing both away,/ The powers of us may serve sogreat a day.”我的父親和格蘭道爾兩個(gè)人都不能來，我們所擁有的兵力也是可以應(yīng)付這個(gè)偉大的日子。
7. treat,do with對(duì)待，對(duì)付。
△Com.2.1.12: “Look,when I serve him so,he takes it ill.”看吧，我這樣對(duì)待他，他定會(huì)大不高興。
△As.1.2.137 (128): “So he servedthe second,and so the third.”他同樣地對(duì)付了第二個(gè)和第三個(gè)。

3. suffice,do足夠，行。
△Rom.3.1.101 (96):“No,'tisnot so deep as a well,nor so wide as a church-door.but 'tis enough，’twill serve.”i.e. It will serve to killme. 不，（這傷口）沒有一口井深，也沒有教堂大門寬，但是這就夠了，這就要了我的命了。

4. be fit,be favourable,be opportune適合，順利，適時(shí)。

is serve: (Welsh dialect) afford opportunity,be op-portune or favourable（方言）提供機(jī)會(huì)，（時(shí)機(jī)）恰好或有利。
△H.V.3.6.69 (64):“But it is very well: what he hasspoke to me,that is well,I warrant you,when time isserve.”i.e. when the opportunity offers itself. 不過這樣很好：他對(duì)我說的這些話很好，我向你保證，只等時(shí)機(jī)一到就好了 。
6. be working,be rife起作用，盛行。

8. be sufficient or acceptable足夠，適宜。
△L.L.L.1.2.119 (113): “it would neither serve for the writingnor the tune.”既無法寫下來，也無法歌唱。
9. fight戰(zhàn)斗。
serve against: fight against,contend with與…戰(zhàn)斗，與…爭(zhēng)高下。
△Ham.4.7.83: “I have seen myself,and served against,the French.”我自己見過法國(guó)人，跟他們打過仗。
